Dear church,

I want to ask that you'd tear away from the noise of social media and news at some point today to come before Jesus, pray for our nation, and care for your heart. Here are a few things that might look like...

1) Lament: over the state of our country and the sinful state of the human heart that got us here. Weep with Jesus over the lack of peace in our nation (Luke 19:41). Listen to and grieve with racial minorities, many who are feeling especially frustrated and discouraged today. If that is you, know that we hurt with you.

2) Repent: of every allegiance that has superseded allegiance to the Jesus we know through Scripture.

3) Reanchor: your hope and humility. As Christians, we hope in a King and Kingdom beyond that of this world, let alone any one country - this hope is our anchor, and it's just as firm and secure today as it was yesterday (Heb. 6:19). Breathe that in. Reanchor your humility by remembering that each of us fall short daily of being the kind of people we hope and claim to be (Isaiah 53:6).

4) Remember: Jesus, the One whose humble leadership we can trust, who saved not by taking up arms but by laying down His life.

Don't have the words to pray any of this yet? Simply spend some time on your knees. Let your knees do the praying and let the Spirit intercede for you (Rom. 8:26).

Lamenting, repenting, reanchoring, and remembering with you today.

How ironic that our everyday ordinary lives can be a reflection of our extraordinary God. Yet God, in all his grandeur, delights to use the ordinary. He’s glorified in it. He even invites us to reimagine it.

Where might He be pushing you to grow? What convictions have been disrupting you? What dreams might He want you to cultivate? What promises might He want you to rest in? What’s a discipline or habit He might want you to adopt? Could there be a word, phrase, or Scripture that God wants to lay on your heart to cast vision over your 2021?

When we give God access to our lives and our stories, there is never a moment that is wasted. All the moments of waiting, listening, struggling, and doubting become notes in a new song God is composing. In every season - even the crazy one you’re in right now - there is always a song He has written, and a new song He is writing (Psalm 40:1-3).

And after all the votes are cast and the day is done —
Let's do it all over again tomorrow.

But today...
May you vote with the wisdom of God in your mind and the compassion of God in your heart.
May you pray with the hope of Christ in your spirit.
May you speak with the humility of Christ on your tongue.
May you ask God to search your heart for apathy, hostility, and pride (Ps. 139:23-24).
May you clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience (Col. 3:12).
May you love your neighbors — no asterisks...
...for the glory of God, and the sake of the world.
Amen.
